How Player Ranking and Training Works in EA SPORTS FC Mobile

Improving your squad in EA SPORTS FC Mobile requires managing two separate progression systems: Training and Ranking. Beginners often confuse the two, but they serve different purposes and require entirely different resources. Understanding how to use both systems efficiently ensures your team remains competitive in Division Rivals and live events.
The Difference Between Training and Ranking
Before spending your resources, it helps to understand what each system actually does.
Training Explained
Training improves a player’s individual in-game statistics, such as sprint speed, passing accuracy, and shot power. While training makes the player perform better on the pitch, it does not increase the number displayed on the top of their card. Your player’s base Overall Rating (OVR) stays exactly the same. Training is done by permanently consuming unwanted reserve players to fill an experience point (XP) bar.
Ranking Explained
Ranking up a player directly increases their base OVR. Every time a player gains a rank, their OVR goes up by one point. Because Team OVR dictates your scoring chances in VS Attack mode, ranking your squad is highly important. Additionally, ranking a player raises their maximum training limit, allowing you to boost their individual stats even further, and awards Skill Points to customize their playstyle. Ranking requires a specific currency called Rank Up Points rather than player cards.
How to Train Your Players
To train a player, open your Club menu, select the player from your starting eleven, and choose the Training option. You must select other player cards from your inventory to use as Training XP. The game requires you to use players from the same general position group: Attackers (ATT), Midfielders (MID), Defenders (DEF), or Goalkeepers (TW/GK). When you use a reserve player for training, they are permanently discarded from your club. You will not get them back. Because of this, you should never use valuable tradeable cards or high-OVR event cards for training. Instead, use cheap, low-rated base cards acquired from the Transfer Market or low-tier event reward packs. Many players complete daily player exchange squad building challenges (SBCs) to turn unwanted cards into bulk training materials without spending their primary Coin balance.
The Rank Up System and Rank Up Points
Recent updates completely overhauled the ranking mechanics. If you played older versions of the game, you no longer need to hunt for duplicate player cards to upgrade your squad. The game also removed universal rank items like Dudek and Mascherano. Instead, ranking relies entirely on a currency called Rank Up Points. If you have leftover Mascherano cards in your inventory from previous seasons, you can trade them in the exchange menu for 100 Rank Up Points each. The new system removes random upgrade failures entirely. As long as you have the required number of Rank Up Points, the rank upgrade is guaranteed to succeed. The cost in points increases depending on both the player's base OVR and their current rank level. High-rated event cards will demand significantly more points to upgrade than standard gold cards.
Rank Colors and Levels
A player can be ranked up a maximum of five times. The current rank is displayed as a colored gem directly on the player’s card item. Rank 1: Green Rank 2: Blue Rank 3: Purple Rank 4: Red Rank 5 (Max): Orange Ranked players hold much higher value on the Transfer Market. If you want to skip the progression grind, you can purchase pre-ranked cards directly from the market by tapping the rank icon above a player’s profile before buying. Buying an Orange-ranked card costs a large amount of Coins, but it saves you the time and Rank Up Points required to upgrade a base card manually.
Skill Points and Secondary Positions
Every time you successfully rank up a player, they earn one Skill Point. Reaching the maximum Orange rank gives the player five total Skill Points. These points are allocated in the player’s profile menu. You can spend them on specific skill paths that fit your tactical needs, such as improving a defender's tackling or a winger's passing. Skill Points are also used to reduce the penalties of playing a card out of position. Normally, if you play a Right Winger (RW) in a Center Attacking Midfield (CAM) spot, their overall rating drops significantly for that match. However, if you invest three Skill Points into a single primary skill path, you unlock advanced secondary skills. Activating these secondary skills dramatically lowers the OVR penalty for playing the card in their alternate positions, making them much more versatile for different formations.
Transferring Training Between Players
As you progress through the season, you will naturally pull better cards and want to replace your older players. When you do this, your training progress is not entirely lost. You can transfer Training XP from an older card to a new one using the Training menu. This allows you to carry over the stat boosts you have already invested in. However, player ranks cannot be transferred between cards. The colored gem, the +1 OVR boosts, and the allocated Skill Points are permanently locked to that specific card. If you no longer need a highly ranked player in your starting lineup, you cannot move their rank to a new acquisition. Your best option is to sell the ranked player on the Transfer Market to generate a large Coin profit, which you can then reinvest into your squad.
Conclusion
Building an elite team in EA SPORTS FC Mobile requires a steady balance of both progression systems. Reserve your low-value, untradeable cards to use as Training XP to raise your starting lineup's physical and technical stats. Meanwhile, carefully manage your Rank Up Points to boost the base OVR and unlock the Skill Points of your most valuable players. Because ranks cannot be transferred, prioritize spending Rank Up Points on top-tier players who will remain in your squad for a long time.

Best Budget Players for Head-to-Head (H2H) Division Rivals
In VS Attack (VSA), your Team Overall Rating (OVR) dictates the quality of your scoring chances. In Head-to-Head (H2H), OVR matters very little. Because you are playing a full, real-time match against a live opponent, raw in-game stats, player traits, and your personal gameplay skill determine the winner.

How the Transfer Market Works in EA SPORTS FC Mobile
Unlike the console version of EA SPORTS FC, which uses a live auction house, FC Mobile uses an automated order-book system. You do not place bids against other live players in real-time. Instead, you submit purchase and sale orders to the game’s market system, which fulfills them automatically based on supply, demand, and specific price caps.

How To Earn Gems In EA SPORTS FC Mobile
Gems are the most valuable resource for free-to-play users in EA SPORTS FC Mobile. You need them to open premium promo packs and acquire high-rated event cards. While it is tempting to spend real money, the game offers plenty of legitimate ways to earn between 15,000 and 20,000 Gems a week simply by playing consistently.
