In Clash of Clans, builder time is the main constraint on base progression. While players can farm resources continuously, the number of active builders and their scheduled tasks dictate how quickly a village develops. Managing builders efficiently involves maximizing active building time, organizing upgrade completion schedules, and prioritizing structures that make farming easier.

Acquiring All Available Builders

Before focusing on upgrade schedules, a player needs to acquire as many builders as possible to increase their total building capacity.

Saving Gems for the First Five Builders

The five standard builders cost a total of 3,750 gems. Because additional builders directly increase the amount of work a player can complete simultaneously, saving gems to purchase these huts is the primary goal for early-level accounts. Players can accumulate these gems by completing achievements, removing obstacles, and collecting from the Gem Mine in the Builder Base. Spending gems on finishing upgrades or purchasing resources delays the acquisition of the fifth builder and slows down overall progression.

Unlocking B.O.B (The Sixth Builder)

Players can unlock a permanent sixth builder, named B.O.B, after reaching Builder Hall 9. Unlocking B.O.B requires completing four tasks in the Builder Base: gearing up three structures in the Home Village, upgrading any Builder Base troop to level 18, upgrading any Builder Base defense to level 9, and reaching a combined level of 45 for the Builder Base heroes. Assigning resources specifically to these four tasks provides a 20 percent increase in Home Village building capacity.

Using the Builder's Apprentice

The Builder's Apprentice is a non-combatant character who can be assigned to speed up ongoing building upgrades in the Home Village. Players can unlock the Apprentice for 500 gems. Unlike standard builders, the Apprentice removes a set amount of time from an active timer. At maximum level, which requires a total investment of 6,500 gems, the Apprentice reduces a single upgrade timer by 8 hours. Because the Apprentice operates on a 23-hour cooldown cycle rather than a strict 24-hour cycle, players can adjust their assignment times slightly each day without losing efficiency. This mechanic helps players modify their completion schedules, ensuring that builders do not finish their tasks while the player is asleep or away from the game.

Organizing Upgrade Timers

If multiple builders finish their tasks at the same time, the player must farm enough resources to start several new upgrades immediately. If the storages are empty, the builders remain idle.

Staggering Completions

To avoid idle builders, players space out their upgrade timers so that one builder becomes available every one to two days. For example, if a player assigns all five builders to 14-day upgrades on the same afternoon, they will experience two weeks of complete inactivity followed by a sudden requirement to farm millions of Gold and Elixir in a single day. A staggered schedule provides enough time to farm the necessary resources to reassign one builder as soon as their previous task ends. If builders are synchronized to finish simultaneously, a player can assign one of them to a shorter task—such as a trap upgrade—to break the cycle and separate the timers.

Managing Overnight Idle Time

When a builder finishes a 14-day task at 3:00 AM, they remain idle until the player logs in the next morning. Over several months, these lost hours accumulate into weeks of wasted time. Players can adjust these finish times using the Builder's Apprentice, a Builder Potion, or a small number of gems to force the upgrade to finish earlier in the evening. This allows the player to start a new long-term upgrade before going to sleep.

Prioritizing Builder Tasks

The order in which structures are upgraded impacts how easily a player can farm the resources needed for future upgrades.

Offensive Structures First

When arriving at a new Town Hall level, players typically assign builders to offensive structures first. Upgrading the Laboratory, Army Camps, Clan Castle, and Pet House directly increases attacking power. Stronger armies make it easier to farm resources from higher-level bases. If builders are assigned to defensive structures while offense falls behind, the player may struggle to raid enough loot to keep all builders active.

Managing Hero Upgrades

Upgrading the Barbarian King, Archer Queen, Grand Warden, and Royal Champion requires significant amounts of Dark Elixir and regular Elixir. To prevent resource bottlenecks, players often dedicate one or two builders specifically to heroes, while assigning the remaining builders to Gold and Elixir upgrades. This approach prevents the player from capping their Gold storages while waiting to farm Dark Elixir.

Keeping One Builder Free for Walls

For highly active players who frequently fill their resource storages before a builder becomes available, keeping one builder free is a practical strategy. A free builder allows the player to spend excess Gold and Elixir on upgrading walls. This prevents resources from overflowing and being wasted. However, for players who only farm enough to start their scheduled upgrades, keeping a builder idle reduces overall efficiency and should be avoided.

Utilizing Builder Potions

A Builder Potion boosts the working speed of all active builders by a factor of 10 for one hour. This saves 9 hours of real-world time per working builder. To extract the maximum time reduction, players should only activate a Builder Potion when all five or six builders are currently working on an upgrade in the Home Village. Additionally, every ongoing upgrade must have at least 10 hours remaining on its timer. If an upgrade finishes 30 minutes into the potion's duration, the remainder of the boost for that specific builder is lost. A single potion applied to six active builders with long timers saves 54 hours of total base progression time.
